Moving home checklist

Whether this is your first move or you’re an experienced home buyer, there’s lots to think about. But we've made it easier for you. Our helpful checklist details the things you will need to consider before the big move.

8 weeks before

  Book some time off work, for before, during and after the move

  Get hold of some cardboard boxes and start packing up non-essential items. Label all boxes and note which room they are to go in



6 weeks before

  Get some quotes from a few reputable removal companies

  Check your home insurance policy - ensure you’re covered from the day you move into your new home. Also, make sure your possessions are insured during the move. The removal company may include this in the cost, but it's worthwhile checking this before you move



4 weeks before

  Arrange for your cable/satellite TV, internet and phone packages to be installed at your new address. You will want to be up and running when you move in

  Research the cheapest energy tariffs for your new home



2 weeks before

  Redirect your post to your new address and update your address on any bills and with your service providers (if applicable). You may find our Address Change Checklist useful as a reminder of who you need to change your address with

  Register to pay for council tax for your new home

  Keep on packing your items up. Don't forget to label your boxes on the top and sides - this will make it easier for you to identify your boxes once you have moved in



1 day before

  If you’re moving to a new home give your house a final clean and ensure you have packed everything up

  Make a note of all meter readings and keep this safe

  Do your final checks – ensure all windows are secure and water, gas and electricity supplies are switched off



Moving day

  Pick up the keys to your new home

  Be there when the removal crew arrives so you can guide them around the house

  Make a note of all meter readings of your new home and keep this safe

  When the removal company unloads your furniture, check for any damage

  Ensure you have unpacked any valuables and store them in a secure place in your new home
