BBC WM and West Brom team up for unique competition

BBC WM and the West Bromwich Building Society have teamed up to launch a massive competition to find out who is going to receive the title of BBC WM ‘Super Citizen’, together with a cheque for £500 and an engraved cut glass chalice.

The purpose of this exciting two-part competition is to identify an individual who has made the greatest contribution to their community – whether as a community group leader, best neighbour, or someone who has served another individual or group.

The competition, which will take place over a three-month period, will be launched on the BBC on Monday 5th January 2004.

Members of the public will be initially invited to make nominations and, a month later, asked to vote from a short-list of candidates from one of ten different areas covering the BBC WM region. This will be done via BBC WM or local participating branches of the West Brom.

The ‘Super Citizen’ title will be announced at a Grand Final, which will resemble a ‘Night at the Oscars’ at Bescot Stadium Walsall on Friday 26th March 2004. The ceremony will take place in front of invited guests, local dignitaries, presenters from the BBC and senior representatives of the West Bromwich Building Society.

Keith Beech, Managing Editor, BBC WM, said: “This is possibly the greatest community project BBC WM has ever undertaken. The event itself is an enormous challenge to us and a tremendous honour for those people in the West Midlands who are nominated as potential community champions. The whole project will prove extremely exciting in its delivery.”

Andrew Messenger, Chief Executive, West Bromwich Building Society, said: “Our relationship with BBC WM has grown and grown. They too, like us, are constantly demonstrating their commitment to the local community, as shown by their programming. We are therefore delighted to offer all our resources to support them in this fabulous initiative.”

Part 1 (Monday 5th January – Sunday 31st January 2004)

The public will be invited to make initial nominations. There is no restriction on the number of nominations that can be made for either one or more nominees.

All nominations will be assessed by a panel of judges, who will focus on the value of the contribution each nominee has made to their local community. The panel will then recommend a short-list of five people in ten designated areas who, if successful, will then proceed to part 2.

The ten designated areas are:
Birmingham – Dudley – Wolverhampton – Walsall – Redditch – Tamworth & South Staffs – Sandwell – Solihull – Coventry – Warwickshire

Part 2 (Monday 16th February – Sunday 7th March)

The public will be invited to vote for one of the five short-listed candidates living in their area. A brief description of each candidate will be available to help voters choose their BBC WM's ‘Super Citizen’. The winner in each area will then advance to the Grand Final.

Part 3

The ‘Super Citizen’ will be chosen from the area winners by a panel of judges.
