Moving home checklist

8 weeks before:

Book some time off work, for before, during and after the move

Get hold of some cardboard boxes and start packing up non-essential items. Label all boxes and note which room they are to go in

6 weeks before:

Get some quotes from a few reputable removal companies

Check your home insurance policy - ensure you’re covered from the day you move into your new house. Also, make sure your possessions are insured during the move. Take a look at our range of home insurance policies here

4 weeks before:

Search TV, internet and phone packages. You will want to be up and running when you move in

Research the cheapest energy tariffs for your new home

2 weeks before:

Redirect your post to your new address and update your address on any bills (TV licence, building society/ bank, insurance providers, pensions etc.)

Register to pay for council tax for your new home

Keep on packing your items up. Don't forget to label your boxes on the top and sides - this will make it easier for you to identify your boxes once you have moved in

1 day before:

Give your house a final clean and ensure you have packed everything up

Make a note of all meter readings and keep this safe

Do your final checks – ensure all windows are secure and water, gas and electricity supplies are switched off

Moving day:

Pick up the keys to your new home

Be present for when the removal crew arrive so you can guide them around the house

When the removal company unloads your furniture, check for any damage

Ensure you have unpacked any valuables and store them in a secure place in your new home
