The mother of teenage fundraiser Stephen Sutton has spoken about her commitment to keep her son’s legacy alive at an event organised by a leading regional building society.

The West Brom invited Jane Sutton to attend its bi-annual Members’ ViewPoint evening, held at its new West Bromwich headquarters at Providence Place.

An audience of around 60 people heard how Jane, an ambassador for Teenage Cancer Trust, had taken on various challenges to raise money for the charity and generate awareness of its work.

The West Brom named Teenage Cancer Trust as its chosen charity earlier this year and has already raised more than £20,000 to support projects in the region. It donated a further £600 during the event to put towards Jane’s fundraising total from her recent climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, which she completed in October.

Building society customers were told about Stephen’s Story and the way his Facebook page and ‘bucket list’ quickly captured people’s imaginations after first being published. Stephen set out wanting to raise £10,000 as a thank you to Teenage Cancer Trust, but within 18 months donations had reached a staggering £3 million.

Stephen passed away in May 2014 at the age of 19, having been diagnosed with bowel cancer four years earlier. Jane spoke of her immense pride in all that he achieved, adding:

“Stephen’s legacy was to encourage us all to have a positive outlook on life and to challenge yourself to do something to help others.”

As well as her Kilimanjaro trek, Jane has also taken part in a world record breaking tandem skydive and ran the London Marathon. Total donations to Stephen’s Story are now in excess of £5.6 million.

Members’ ViewPoint is a feedback event for West Brom customers, with attendees also enjoying a presentation from Society Chief Executive Jonathan Westhoff and a lively question and answer session on topics including interest rates, the savings market and the state of the economy.

Customer Research Manager Helen Bryce said: “We value the opportunity to get feedback on our products and services and listen to suggestions for things we could improve.

“Hearing an inspirational talk from Jane Sutton was a perfect way to round off the evening and gave a powerful illustration of the outstanding work that Teenage Cancer Trust does.”
