Paying money into your account

You can pay money into your account electronically, by setting up a standing order or using a cheque.

Things to check before you pay in for the first time

  • Once your account is open, you'll need to pay money into it within 30 days, otherwise it'll be closed. Any money you pay in afterwards will be sent back to you.
  • When you pay into your account for the first time, make sure your payment meets the account’s minimum opening balance - you'll find this in your account's terms and conditions. If it's any lower, we’ll send it back to you.
  • Check that the terms and conditions of your account allow additional payments to be made after you've made your first payment. For example a fixed rate product which has an upper limit may not allow you to make additional payments.

Paying into your account electronically

You can use your account details to pay money in from another bank or building society. When you pay in electronically, make sure the payee name matches the account holder(s).

You'll be able to pay money in 24 hours after your account has been opened.

Setting up a standing order

If you want to set up a standing order to pay money to your account, you'll need to contact your bank or building society where the money will come from to arrange this.

They'll need these account details to set up your standing order:

West Bromwich Building Society
Account number: Your 8-digit West Brom account number
Sort code: 40-64-36

It's important that you quote these details accurately when setting up a standing order.

What details will your bank need?

You'll need to tell your bank:

  • The amount you want to pay into your account.
  • The start date for the first payment.
  • The frequency of the payment.
  • The date you would like the payments to end. Otherwise, the standing order will continue until you tell your bank to stop the payments.

ISA transfers

You can transfer your ISA savings to a West Brom account.

If you move your money from your ISA into an account that isn't an ISA, it'll lose its tax-free status.

If you've sent a payment to the wrong account

Realising a payment has gone to the wrong account can be worrying, but we're here to help. If this happens, contact us as soon as you can - the quicker you let us know, the sooner we can start trying to put things right.

We'll ask you for the details of the payment and try and trace it by contacting the bank or building society the payment has been sent to.

Investigating misdirected payments can take time, but we'll give you an update as soon as we can within 20 working days of receiving your request.

We can't guarantee that we'll be able to retrieve any money sent to the wrong account, but we'll use our best endeavours to recover the funds and return them to you.

Common questions

Your deposit might not land in your account straight away. The time it takes will depend on how you've paid in. For example, payments made via BACS typically take up to three working days to clear, while Faster Payments are usually visible in your account by the end of the next working day.
