Life at the West Brom

Community

We strive to support the communities in which we operate. We fundraise every year for a nominated charity and offer assistance to local causes and community groups through grants and corporate volunteering.

In 2021, we partnered with Barnardo's with the ambition of building four Gap Homes for young care leavers in the Black Country.. The Society is looking to join the Dormant Assets Scheme, operated by Reclaim Fund Ltd (RFL), to fund £500,000 for the new homes, with further colleague fundraising planned in the future to provide continued support to the charity.

Volunteering

Giving money is vital to charities, but giving your time is also of immense value. And it’s not just the charity that gains from your efforts. Everyone who’s volunteered says what a special feeling it gave them – not only learning more about the work of a charity but also the personal and emotional rewards you get from volunteering.

Depending on the demands of the business, the Society provides opportunities for you to do voluntary work 2 days during the year for community groups and charities. It might be our chosen charity. Or a luncheon club for older people, a youth project, perhaps a facility for people with disabilities, or a reading project with primary school children. Indeed, you may already be involved in a local charity or community group.

Wellbeing

At the West Brom we value your wellbeing and want you to be your best inside and outside of work.

Wellbeing hub and events - Our employee intranet, WeBe, has a dedicated hub for Wellbeing containing regularly updated resources and information to help colleagues to balance their general, physical, mental and financial health. Examples of recent articles include:

  • It's normal to want more and less lockdown at the same time
  • How can you help your friends and team members – learn how to spot wellbeing red flags
  • What can you do to build a better work-life balance and build your resilience?

We also run regular Wellbeing events for colleagues, such as mindfulness sessions or online yoga!

Mental Health First Aiders - We have a number of trained Mental Health First Aiders throughout the business who act as a first point of contact for an employee who is experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress. This interaction could range from having an initial conversation through to supporting the person to get appropriate help. As well as in a crisis, Mental Health First Aiders are valuable in providing early intervention help for someone who may be developing a mental health issue.

Employee assistance programme - We’re proud to partner with Heath Assured, the UK and Ireland’s leading wellbeing provider, which provides free advice, information and counselling services for employees and their families. The helpline is available 24/7 and is completely confidential.

Environment

We have a duty of care for our customers, colleagues, and the environment.

A key part of our environmental plan is to reduce the Society’s carbon footprint, and previously we had set ourselves the target of zero carbon emissions by 2035. Because of the great progress we have made, we’re moving this target forward to be carbon neutral (scopes 1 and 2) by 2025. We’re confident we can achieve this and will continue to introduce green initiatives to make sure our operations are as environmentally friendly as possible.
